Report of Grievance Chair Russ Sheffler

Welcome to all the new hires for the railroad and utility positions. These new employees were brought in because the company agreed to start additional craft training programs. The new members will back fill the positions of the people entering the one and two year craft training programs.

There will probably be another opportunity to enter a craft training program in the first quarter of 2012. Based on contract language, non-craft personnel can sign bids into the crafts. If you have any question about this, contact your Grievance Committeeman or me.

During the months of August and September there were 5 discharges. One of these, involving a probationary employee who was fired for excessive absenteeism, was upheld. The other four members have either been reassigned to different jobs or given the opportunity to sign a last chance agreement. I'd like to thank President Mark Granakis for his assistance in resolving these challenging complaints.

Thanks also to Mike Deighton for filling in during my recent week's vacation. He did a good job during discharge hearings that were held in my absence.

I'd like to congratulate everyone who worked on the outages in the Blast Furnace and Steel Producing for a job well done. Considering the thousands and thousands of hours needed for these outages, our safety record was outstanding.

There are outages still scheduled for Finishing and the Hot Mill. A fourth crew was recently added to the Hot Mill. This shows the company is committed to move a large amount of tonnage through that facility. The company is reconsidering when the weekly downturns in these units will be scheduled.

Although the orders for the Finishing division have slowed somewhat, I am fully confident that the 1st quarter of 2012 will be strong for all units.

The recent retirement information meetings were well attended. I wish a happy and relaxing retirement to all those who plan to end their steel career in the next few months. If anyone has questions about the retirement process, please contact me or one of the other Union representatives.

I hope all our members exercised their right to vote this November. There were key issues on the Ohio ballot affecting middle class men and women. It was good to see the overwhelming vote to defeat Issue 2. Whether you are a Democrat, a Republican, or an independent, it's time for all of us to unite against the attacks on our way of life.
