L.U. 979 WOMEN OF STEEL ESSAY/VISUAL CONTEST RULES

  1. Entrant must be child, stepchild, grandchild, sister, brother, niece or nephew of Local Union 979 member or SOAR 979 member.

 

  1. Entrant must be entering grades 1 through 12 in the fall of 2009. Entrants will be divided into four groups: grades 1 – 2; grades 3 – 6; grades 7 – 9; and grades 10 – 12.
  1. Entries will be divided into written (essay or poem) and visual (video or drawing) categories.

 

  1. Entries should be about a Union member who has influenced the entrant and what being in a Union means to that person. This could be a relative, teacher, coach, or other adult role model or a historical figure.
  1. Essays or poems for those in grades 1 – 2 are limited to a maximum of 250 words. Essays or poems for those in grades 3 – 6 are limited to a maximum of 500 words. Essays or poems for those in grades 7 – 9 are limited to a maximum of 1000 words. Essays or poems for those in grades 10 – 12 are limited to a maximum of 2000 words.

 

  1. Each entrant is limited to one entry. (This rule does not prohibit those who entered in previous years from entering the current contest.)
  1. All entries must be the original work of the entrant. Judges reserve the right to talk to the entrant to resolve questions of originality.

 

  1. Essays or poems may be typed, printed, or handwritten.
  1. Entrant shall not include name on entry. Instead each entrant must complete and attach an application form.

 

  1. All entries must be received at the Union Hall, 3421 Independence Rd., Cleveland, Ohio 44105 by Wednesday, September 30, 2009.
  1.  All decisions of the judges will be final.

 

  1.  Three prizes will be awarded for each age group in both the written and visual categories. First place winners will receive a $200 savings bond. Second place winners will receive a $100 savings bond. Third place winners will receive a $50 savings bond.
  1.  All winners may invite 2 guests to the awards dinner. Any transportation expense is the responsibility of the winner and his or her family. Any winner who is unable to attend the awards dinner will have his or her prize mailed.
